At a terminal or ATM, “pay in EUR” is a dynamic currency conversion offer. Compare its displayed rate; choosing PLN normally leaves conversion to your card issuer.

Built around the real decision

What this tool helps you answer

  • Compare the same PLN purchase total across card, cash/ATM and DCC.
  • Load an official NBP reference rate while keeping the rate editable.
  • Include both Polish ATM operator charges and home-bank withdrawal fees.
  • See the avoidable cost above the reference conversion and the saving versus DCC.

Read the result correctly

Decision support, not a booking quote

The cheapest line reflects only the fees entered. If a terminal offers a home-currency total, copy its implied markup into DCC; otherwise the default is a scenario, not a claim about that merchant. Our Poland currency guide walks through where each of these fees appears in practice.

Limits to keep in view

  • NBP table A is a reference rate, not a guaranteed Visa, Mastercard or bank settlement rate.
  • Cash convenience, card acceptance and unused banknotes are not assigned a monetary value, so size the PLN total first with is Poland expensive?.
  • Some ATMs disclose an operator fee only after the withdrawal amount is entered.

How it works

Visible assumptions, useful estimate

  1. 1The user enters the current number of PLN per home-currency unit from a trusted reference.
  2. 2The calculator attempts to load an NBP table A reference rate and keeps that rate fully editable.
  3. 3Card, cash and DCC costs apply their visible percentage and fixed fees to the same PLN spending amount.
  4. 4The result compares payment mechanics only; it does not predict a bank’s settlement rate or merchant behaviour.

Questions before you use the result

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose PLN or my home currency at a card terminal?+

Choosing PLN lets your card issuer perform the conversion. A home-currency offer is dynamic currency conversion and may include a larger markup; compare the exact rate shown before accepting it.

Does Poland use the euro?+

No. Poland’s currency is the Polish złoty (PLN). Some businesses may quote euros, but the exchange rate can be poor.

Is cash or card always cheaper?+

Neither is universally cheaper. A no-FX-fee card can be excellent, while repeated ATM fees can make cash costly. Enter your actual bank fees to compare, and keep a small cash float for the situations covered in tipping in Poland.
